Preschool Portraits {School Portrait Photography | Barbara LeGere Photography}

I had the lovely pleasure of photographing some very adorable and spunky preschoolers this September. As usual, they were a fun challenge with a few surprises. We had some beautiful smiles, great funny faces, belly laughs and a few no-thank you's. Even my daughter and her best friend hammed it up for the camera! This year I tried out a few treatments to the images just for kicks.

9.10.11 Oh, you know he has no excuses for forgetting that anniversary date! And, I am confident Jeff won't have any problem remembering his stunning bride, Elaine. As a Marine and an under-water welder, you'd think he was such a tough guy. But, underneath the tough exterior is a man deeply and madly in love with this beautiful woman. And I can understand why.

Happy First Birthday! {Austin Child Photographer | Barbara LeGere}

I had the pleasure of shooting this family in the fall and I was surprised at how much I truly enjoyed the session with three little boys! And, they didn't let me down this time either! Mom (who is gorgeous btw) suggested we meet at their favorite play spot on the greenbelt. Someone was looking out for us, because the overcast day allowed the boys to roam free and we could shoot in almost any direction (instead of heading for even light). The boys were in great spirits, the family as fun as ever and the family dog - ready for a walk. Thank your for letting me help you celebrate your youngest's first year! Happy Birthday Sweet Boy!

New Years Card Session for us! | Austin Photography

Being a photographer, I have snapped many beautiful images of my girls, but 1) I am rarely actually IN the pictures (I don't usually mind:)) and 2) images taken by other people always just naturally feel more interesting. So, my friend and fellow (awesome) photog, Mike Reed (http://www.mikereedphoto.com/) shot a session for us at Kiddie Acres.

Ever since my eldest rode her first ride there at the age of two, she has always absolutely loved Kiddie Acres. I knew this may be the last year for her to enjoy kiddie acres before she outgrew it, so it was the perfect location (sniff, sniff). The girls were at ease there (obviously) and we all had a great time. And, right across from Kiddie Acres was the COOLEST train ever. bonus! Hint: Favorite family joints make excellent photography locations.

Mike did an amazing job - thank you so much Mike! Let's do it again!

(ps - it was great to finally be in front of the lens and feel what you all go through with professional sessions. i did love shopping for new outfits!!)

Super Dooper Well Behaved Children | Barbara LeGere Austin Children Photographer

Organizing your photos {Barbara LeGere | Austin Photographer}

"One day!!" One day I will organize these photos. One day I will back up these photos. One day I will print these photos. Start TODAY!

Don't look back, just start a system today. Implement it for everything in the future. Don't worry about where you've been. A year from now you will be sooo glad you did.

Here's my system. It's not perfect. It's redundant. And, it may not be for you, but perhaps it will inspire you to develop your own system.

1) UPLOAD by DATE to ONE spot
When I upload my photos, they ALL go to C->Pictures. If there's an image on my harddrive, it's there. Within that folder, I set my Canon software to upload all the pictures into folders by date. Now, I don't have to think about it, I don't do anything but plug in the camera. And, viola! They are just there in nice sequential order. (I once had a Nikon point&shoot camera and couldn't figure out how to do this, but I'm sure there's a way.) After that, I might add a description to the label, but never touch the date.
I.E. "2011_10_10" becomes "2011_10_10 Genny turns 1", just so I know where the important events are.

2) COPY into MONTH folders
Now comes the slightly more wasteful step, but it works for me. I HATE deleting photos. Always have, always will. So, instead, I create a folder for each year and a folder for each month within that. So, I'll go through a day of photos and COPY just my very favorites and place them into the month folder.

The photos in my 'month folders' are my favorites - the ones I will share with my family on Shutterfly (cringe) and ultimately make my photobooks from.

3) MOVE the 'day folders' into 'RAW YEAR' folder
Once I have finished building entire month's worth of favorite images, I move all the 'day folder' photos into a folder called 'RAW 2010' (or whatever the year is). So, now I don't have to look at the 'day folders' anymore. I just have a nice neat tidy month's worth of favorite photos. I rarely need to go back into the 'raw photos'.

4) UPLOAD to SHARE site
I upload the month's photos to my share page on Shutterfly and then I'm done.

Side note: I started a share page on Shutterfly when my first daughter was born. Now, I'm stuck with it because ALL our monthly images are there (five year's worth). I love going back and looking at them. While Shutterfly's quality is OK, I prefer my own professional printer. But, Shutterfly is now my 3rd back-up for personal images, so I can't complain - they are storing my images for FREE! If you'd like to see my share page, please send me an email and I'll send you a link.

5) CREATE a YEAR Photobook
At year's end, it is so simple to create a photobook of the year. I have all my favorites from the year by month. I can create it using any photobook site like shutterfly or my publisher etc. (This year I get to try out my new professional software...whoop!)

It sounds way more complicated than it is.

I can't stress enough to start a system today and stick with it.

Before and After {Barbara LeGere Photography | Portrait Photographer}

With the new year, I decided you should be more in control of your images. Yeah for you! So, you get to select which three images you will receive in full size high-resolution jpgs - instead of me. You pick which three you would like to be able to enlarge, print and mount. You pick which three I pay attention to and edit (and remove stray hairs and snoogies from), instead of me. Nine times out of ten, I select the same images you would from a session, but every once in a while, I don't. So, now, you will select which three get the attention. I also feel that you should get to keep and use all the images from your session, so you still receive those in a smaller format to print for your personal use.

Some images need very little retouching. Maybe just highlights and shadows touched up a bit, or a bit of sharpening to the eyes. But some need a little more TLC or even an artistic treatment. To give you an idea of some of my prior work, here are a few 'before and afters':

Brand New Boy {Austin Newborn Photographer | Barbara LeGere}

A friend of mine won a session from me through our children's preschool silent auction. It was a win for all of us! While she has two darling girls, her spur of the moment idea was a newborn session for her brand new baby boy. And, what a splendid idea it was! His favorite spot was clearly the swaddle, just like any brand new baby. So, we "decorated" him ET style and had a few good giggles doing it. Can't wait to watch this precious baby boy grow up. Thank you for the opportunity to capture him while he still sits still.

They just moved into a new house. (Gasp! Can you believe trying to move with two kids AND preggers?) I think this wall is begging for one of these portraits right over the chair.:)

The 'MR' Family {Barbara LeGere | Austin Children Photographer}

These two children are two of the most well behaved children ever. 'How are you eldest of the three MR children?' 'Great! And, let me tell you about the math I'm doing in school!' Really? What child talks numbers as an introduction?

And, because they are so nice mannered, they smiled each and every time I put the camera to my eye. Typically, I spend an entire session trying to get children to smile, but after a number of safe (and beautiful) shots... I finally caught them laughing!!! (pic 2)

Baby MR is a doll too, but he may break the well-mannered disposition tradition (but not the super sweet part!) because he likes to go, go go! Thank you for the opportunity to capture your beautiful family! And, happy first birthday baby MR!

Reunion {Barbara LeGere | Austin Family Photographer}

Twenty-one years ago, 'M' was adopted by an loving family who took care of him when his birth mother was not able. But now, 'M' is (almost) all grown up and reunited with his fun-loving birth mom and her two sassy daughters and they are all loving it! So, it's a very happy new beginning. I am so thrilled to get to capture this reunited family!

The following image makes you think that big sister adores little sister. And she does, except that one time when she decided her baby sister needed a haircut. A really, really short haircut.

New Respect & ACL Recap {Austin Photographer}

Let's just say I have a new found respect for concert photographers.

What an opportunity!! I got a press pass for ACL! Wahoo! I was so nervous that someone would yell at me for breaking a "rule" of the pit that I didn't know. But, I didn't. Well, not that I know of anyway. And, one photog was even nice enough to give me earplugs (that I had forgotten....rookie!).

Concert photography seems so glamorous - you're upfront and close and personal with the "stars". But, in reality, you get two, maybe three songs in the pit to capture the perfect moment (or the moment you're employer wants you to get). You don't control the lighting (no flash allowed), you don't control the subject and you don't even really control your vantage point. There are microphones and speakers and other photographers all in your line of vision. And, let's face it, most people don't really look so hot singing. Their mouths are wide open and their eyes are squinty - but they sound great! I don't know how they did it in the days of film. Even if all your camera settings and composition are right on the money, you still have to shoot a ton of frames just to capture an interesting (read not so ugly) expression. Don't let 'em fool you, it's a tough job.

I realize this post is months overdue, but it was so fun, I want to remember it!! Better late than...well ya know.

On our way in, everyone was so helpful...the ticket scalper, the info girl and the...hmmm...

We biked into a sea of bicycles.

Ahhh, Austin.

Sights of ACL.

The one and only band I had any interest in seeing. And, they didn't let me down. Vampire Weekend was fantastic!

This performer only allows the photogs to stand on one side of the pit or the other. And, you have to choose before she comes on stage and you can't move to the other side during the performance. I picked stage right because it was significantly less crowded. And, I chose well! She stayed on "our" side for the first two songs. Which is all we got.

Here I was feeling young and vibrant, and this guy just took me down a notch. I don't get DeadMau5. I don't get a DJ who plays a bass beat repeatedly wearing a big mouse head with ears. That's all he does. The lights change slightly during the performance, but the music doesn't. At least not to me. But, these kids (and they were kids) were CRAZY about him. And what's funny is that there's really not much to shoot. I mean, you take one shot of each light set (all of four maybe) and you've got it. But, the photogs in the pit just kept on shooting. I have no idea why.

My BIL loves this guy. For you Uncle Wavy.

And here we are.

Our girls joined us for a bit and rocked it out too.

But, they headed home for naps.

My favorite band by far was Gorgol Bordello. So fiery with energy. They had the crowd in a frenzy.

My husband felt so cool with his guest pass which got him stage seats for this show. And, there's little me trying to be cool in the pit. I obviously need practice holding that big lens.

And, there's my husband thinking he's really really cool.

I <3 hot mommas too!

And, oh my goodness, besides Boomerang's Pies, the best value and best tasting meal was a pimento cheese sandwich and fries from Hyde Park. Concert food CAN be delicious!

Lastly. I love you Fried Twinkie. You are divine. I saw you the morning of the first day, and just HAD to try you on our way out the last night. You were more perfect than I imagined.

The best way to end the weekend. Farewell ACL.

Before His Teeth Fall Out! (and Puff) {Austin Children Photography}

Quick! We need pictures fast!! Our "baby's" teeth are falling out! Well, he's not really a baby, but when your first born's baby teeth fall out, it's a monumental milestone. At least for the parents. So, we documented baby teeth - and it just so happens that this family is beautiful and fun and lively. We had a great time jaunting down South Congress on one of the busiest shopping nights of the year. Thanks for such a great time and beautiful images!

Also, props out to Pops! My dad came along to assist on this shoot. A first for both of us! He carried bags, held the reflector and generally gave no complaints:). It also happens to be the first time I've teared up at a session. The one song that our Dad sang to us when we were little (that's me and my two sisters) was Puff the Magic Dragon. My little sister and Dad even danced to it for their father/daughter dance at her wedding. Anyway, we're walking along South Congress and I hear live music coming from the food trailers on S. Congress (go figure). But, of all the songs, of all the nights, it just so happens that the night I took my father to work with me - they played our song. I couldn't believe it. May we all always frolic in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee. love ya dad.

A Football, a Duckie and the Dogs {Austin Children Photographer}

But really, all they cared about was the lollipop. Amazing the power of a lollipop. The football and duckie were fun for a while, but everyone (including the dogs) agreed that sugar is the clear motivator. Two sets of girls - both almost the exact same age as my two girls? Come on - could I feel any more at ease with these adorable children? And, their mamas are just beautiful (I think it may run in the family). And, their daddy's were the best assistants ever...putting their muscles to the test holding up blankets to make shade and making their children laugh so hard I could see their tonsils through the lens.

Running So Fast! {Austin Children Photographer}

Mom's quote to me was, "He likes to ruuuuuunnn!". My girls didn't walk until almost 17 months. So, I though, how much can a 12 month old run? Um, well, almost an entire session. Running to Daddy proved to be extremely fun. But, once Mom starting singing and quoting children's books he sat still and was just enamored with his Mama.

And, while he loves to run. I'm pretty sure tunnel slides are not his thing.

A new location! I love new locations! They keep me on my toes and, more likely than not, they mean something to the family. Mom picked this location because she says she spent countless hours here when her firstborn was little. He even has a brick here to prove it!

Such a sweet and energetic family. All four of them kept up their enthusiasm and mom never ran out of creative ideas. Well, that was, until the little one ran out of lollipop. Who can blame her? I get sad when my lollipop is gone too.

My friend Mike Reed and I decided to trade sessions this year to get family portraits for ourselves and for most excellent practice and location scouting. I have to admit, it was a really good experience being in front of the lens instead of behind it. Perfect for my Blog {Austin Children Photographer}

I made the mistake of saying "Oh, she is soooo cute! She'll look great on my blog!" Dad's reply was something to the effect of, "Maybe you should be paying us!" Well, she is cute, and she does look great on the blog, but let's not push it too far:)...

And, wow! she is one loved child and grandchild! Mom rounded up the both sides of the family to make sure everyone was documented with her beautiful daughter. It was such a great idea! Not only were there enough adults to entertain the children, but there were enough adults to be fantastic assistants! Way to hold the "sun"/reflector! You're hired (as an intern:))!

Perfect Light and Storyboard Sizes {Austin Children Photographer}

I love shooting in the evening. Sometimes, we hit it just right.
I also love "fall" in Texas, where, it's not really fall because none of the leaves are falling and it's still blazing saddles hot during the day, but it's margarita weather cool in the evening. (Just right for sipping margaritas on a patio, any patio, in the evening.) It also happens to be ballerina weather too.

And, I now offer storyboards in larger sizes! I would love to make this into a canvas and put it in our hallway....

Set Up for Success {Austin Children Photographer}

We knew we needed to set Nolan up for success. He's adorable and spirited, and sometimes takes a while to warm up to new people. Since I'm good friends with Nolan's super cool mom, we decided to have a fun playdate before our official photo playdate. I brought the camera so he could see it and play with it. Not really play, but at least touch it. You know touching it is not enough. But, getting to actually take pictures with it turned out the be the best reward (read bribe) ever!

And, he was awesome! He handled the photo session like a real pro, both in front of and behind the lens. You know how kids show you up all the time - especially with anything electronic - and it really gets under your skin cuz it's so easy for them - well, check out Nolan's work in the last frame.

just for the record, Nolan is the first and probably the last child to ever touch my equipment. but, it was worth it.:)

A little bit of Laughter {Austin Maternity Photographer}

My last name is LeGere. It's French. When I met my husband, before caller ID, I called his office phone and listened to him repeat his name on voicemail - over and over - just so I could determine how the heck to pronounce his name. My language skills are, let's call it, lacking. So, when this little boy called his Aunt 'Taunt Bo' (spell?)...um...Excuse me? Can you repeat that? Oh goodness. I felt a little deja vu.

So, after laughing about my inabilities, we laid a pregnant woman on the ground. Have you ever watched a pregnant woman laugh? As her husband put it, "It looks like the Hindenburg." And, well, that only made us laugh harder. Here's the before and during laugh...

Growing Up {Austin Children Photographer}

Santa Fe Photographic Workshop Review

An entire week! All by myself? Well, with no one who yells, "Mama, are you going poo-poo?" in the public restroom. And, no one who can repeat "Brekfas yime" (translation Breakfast time) as many times as humanly possible?

OK, I may not have learned EVERYTHING I wanted to know about photography. But, I did get to go to summer camp with adults. I loved my classmates. I couldn't have asked for a more diverse, interesting and genuine group than this one. They were by far my favorite part. (And that's saying a lot because I didn't load a dishwasher once for 5 days straight - and that, was utterly refreshing.)

We got to play with light - reflecting, bouncing, creating. We learned lighting patterns so that now I can't look at an image without trying to determine it's pattern. We got to explore locations and new people. And, we got to practice on models who sit still! Very cool stuff!

so, I have to start with the Native American...it's NM!...

we were required to do a self portrait.

the rock is my amazing husband, who not only is my rock, but really likes rocks. i personally think he likes rocks because they are heavy and he likes to carry around heavy things - especially on long hikes.

like the hike back up the grand canyon (that rock was about 20 lbs - as if hiking down and up the grand canyon in a day isn't enough).

the fruit are our girls.

we hope the foundation we give them today will help them soar tomorrow.

well, it better not be tomorrow. maybe in 100 years when they are allowed to move out of the house.

Daddy Photo Tip

OK, let's face it, mama pregnant's face is round. Pregnancy, delivery, motherhood. The more of these components, the more prominent the double chin. I don't care how many miles you log on the pavement and how glowing you are, it's a benefit of carrying children.

So, Dad, we don't exactly want to remember the way we really looked on the most important day of our lives. Please try to help us look just a little bit better. Here's how.

Take the photo from above. That's it.

Chin up and viola, there goes the water weight! (well, sort of)

Here's an example of my husband's fantastic composition of both of our girls. These are obviously not "professional", but capture the moment and trust me, mama's face looked way more like a dimpled watermelon than these images lead you to believe.

This photo tip can obviously be applied to anyone. Get a step stool out and start shooting the people you love from above, they may love you more.

Hold My Hand

I've had high fives and hugs at the end of a session, but this time...I knew it was going to be a great session when the little girl asked me to hold her hand (and even carry her) at the beginning of the session. And, I was right! The weather totally cooperated and with enough snacks and a playground, we captured some gorgeous images.

We get so rushed during a photo session and request so much of our little ones, that sometimes we forget that our pressure doesn't help. We tried and tried to get an image with Daddy and Big Sister would have none of it. But, towards the end, as I shot Mom and Baby Brother, Dad started quietly playing with Big Sister. Playing with rocks, trying on bracelets and from a distance I shot the two of them interacting, not knowing if she would warm up or not. But, ever so slowly, she scooted further and further towards Daddy and I scooted closer and closer towards the two of them. And viola! A keeper.

It was such a good reminder for me, that you parents know your children. Try as I might with all my antics to capture a memorable image, you really are the key. And, this Daddy, wow, he really loves that little girl. I betcha he will be balling his eyes out on her wedding day.

Our Eyes vs. the Camera {Austin Child Photographer}

I love when clients and I can collaborate - I love it when they make suggestions. Typically, their ideas rock and mean something to them and we run with them. But, sometimes I find myself saying, well, actually, while your eye sees that clearly, the camera will not. So, I thought I'd take the time to try and explain myself. Well, I have a hard time understanding it myself, so my explanation is pretty basic.

When you are sitting by the pool watching your kids play this summer, take note. Your eyes see the bright blue sky, the bright green grass, the lucky grandparents "helping out" by sitting in the shade of the oak tree sipping lemonade and your kids are the bright pool splashing the annoyed young girl sunbathing in the kiddy pool (What does she expect, really?). The camera, however, cannot. All that bright light on the pool and the super dark shadow under the tree and the blue of the sky are extremely different to the camera.

Basically, your eye can see 20 degrees (or stops of light) and the camera: 4 (roughly).
I was out scouting Butler Park with Genny a number of months ago and snapped this:

See, in the first one, you can see Genny and she's still even a little dark. If I had metered properly for her skin, the background would have been really white. And, of course, in the second image, there's our treasured Austin skyline, but no Genny. Maybe not the best example, but you get the idea. Your eyes see it all, but while technology is awesome, it's not nearly as awesome as the human body.

And, if you really care...yes, there are ways to augment and sort of create the world our eyes see with extra light. Trust me, this is fun with cityscapes that don't move a whole lot. This is not so much fun with toddlers.

Speaking of toddlers...here's my sweet baby taking the stairs like a big girl...

This is also part of the reason we do sessions in the early mornings and late evenings. This is Jossie in the evening a couple days later. No, I did not bribe her with that cheeseburger in her hand.

Scout Out {Austin Children Photographer}

In the business world, especially small business, people are very protective of their work. There are turf lines drawn and doors closed. But not with Magan (check her out!: http://portfolio.maganslens.com/ ). She is a fellow photographer and shares and is super nice too! We went location scouting back in February (remember coats?!) to check out Laguna Gloria, which is beautiful!

I recently purchased a few new photoshop tools (actions) and still haven't spent much time with them. I always go back to what I know. This time, I thought I'd try the new ones on for size and even tried a new workflow. I was shooting for "cooler" (as in opposite of warmer), but didn't quite get there. Course, my subject IS wearing brown. I still like them though. Magan created this http://blog.maganslens.com/?p=1732 about our day...which inspired my mini-version.

Sweet Baby Cate {Austin Newborn Photographer}

I had the distinct pleasure of capturing this baby in the belly, just a few days old and again for a "real" session at about 3 months old. What a beautiful baby! As my husband says: now that's a good head shape.

Mom and I were joking how much she looks like Daddy. But, I have to tell you, after processing these images, she's going to be stunning, just like her Mama.

Rewards not Bribes {Austin Children Photographer}

I read a while back that in the ancient times the Jews rewarded their children for learning with honeycakes. Therefore connecting happiness with learning. It worked for them, it works for me. Course, I'm not really sure what they learned today except that they don't like the "10 clicks of the camera before the first lick" rule. I learned (again) that if you want your kids to smile, give them sugar.

Oh this little girl was adorable! Almost, just almost, makes me want another baby. Occupational hazard. She had a gooo-oooood weekend. Laughter, Longhorns and Lollipops

OK, so you won't see the lollipop pictures because the groom-to-be asked me to kindly not post those. I don't know why not - a grown man eating an oversized lollipop? Course, I'm not sure why he's worried - he's already got the (great) girl!

This beautiful couple is getting married in October at the UT Alumni center - and thought it would be sweet to do their engagement session there. I couldn't agree more! It was so romantic to know that in a few short months they would tie the knot at that very spot - and be together forever.

I also want to say thank you to this couple, because they were up for anything! You two were amazing! I know you're wedding is going to be so much fun!

A Toddler and Two Dogs

I hate to admit it, but this was my first shoot with a family PLUS two doggies. Thank goodness the doggies AND the adorable little boy were both so well behaved. As a matter of fact, the dogs just wanted to lie down instead of racing around like my dog - like a maniac. What a lovely, happy, relaxed family who is clearly in love with their little boy.
